As I live out in the country miles from the nearest shops then I would say a necessity. What's to defend?

it really depends on the use. for the most part, people in the city have other alternatives, many of which can be faster and cheaper but not more comfortable so for them it's a luxury.

other people however need cars for work or just to get out of their very large properties and they may not have the options like biking or public transport to let them get around for these people, it's a necessity.

I personally live in the city and taking public transport takes me 2 hours to get to work, if I take a car it takes 30 minutes. I don't see a car as a necessity however it does give me a whole lot of comfort.

It is a luxury. I have known several people who have lived without cars for decades; in NYC a lot of people have lived without a car for generations. All people lived without cars for thousands of years.
