It could be a number of different reasons -- some serious, some not so serious. Take your car to a dealer or a local Pep Boys store and get them to to put a diagnostic meter on your car to determine the reason for the light. Do not keep driving your car with the light on. You could cause a lot of damage by doing so.

Put a scanner on the Lexus and read the codes. Start from there. It is usually a bad O2 sensor.

First of all, the vehicle is a Lexus RX 300. The letters must be capitalized. Check the car manual. Second of all, the item you ask about is a proper name of a system, Check Engine light, and must be capitalized. Otherwise the words, check engine, means you check the engine. "Hey, Joe? How about you check the engine? It seems to be overheating. Thank." Quite a bit of difference. As to the over 50 inputs to the system, only a mechanic that has access to the Lexus data base can read the code given, track down the list of possible causes, test to determine exactly what the problem could be, and test again until the problem is located. Knowing a code is basically worthless. Ask any mechanic. It is best to allow a professional to do his or her job to fix the car. Very complex machines. Go find one. And write correctly. Essential for good communications.
