The starter has a shaft that engages the flywheel (big, flat disc that gets the whole motor turning). Each has teeth/ is a gear. Sometimes, the alignment gets a little off, and it makes noise or doesn't work at all. The shaft can get a little bent or whatever, and the teeth aren't touching smoothly so it makes noise. Starters eventually die anyways after about 10 years or more and have to be replaced. They require more and more amps from the battery as they get older. After years of use, it will need more amps than a battery can give and quits working. Soooooo..... you should just replace the starter. Batteries last about 4 to 7 years depending on if you have a cheap one or a good one. That's it. There is nothing you can do about it. They die and have to be replaced every so often. Every five years or so you will need a new one. Good luck.
