Default Do I need to go to a Lexus Dealership for another key?

My husband recently bought me a 2000 GS300 and it only came with 1 key where the part that goes on the key ring is broken. 1. How can this be fixed? The buttons on the key to unlock the doors/trunk do not work. The light does not come on when the buttons are pressed. I have to insert the key into the door to open it. 2. Is this just a battery issue? Also, I would like to get another full functioning key for my husband. 3. Do I need to purchase this through a Lexus dealership? The quote is almost $300 which is fine if this is the only way. 4. Would I also have to go to a dealership to get a valet key as well?

Thank you in advance.

With your current key, it may or may not be the battery. Buy a new battery for 3 bucks and find out.

For a new key, you can purchase it anywhere. You'll save a few bucks if you buy somewhere like E-Bay, for example, there are discount OEM Lexus part dealers on the internet too), but you'll still need to actually go to the dealership to get it programmed for your car. The dealer may also charge you to program a key you get somewhere else (they usually won't if you bought it from them), plus when you buy on your own, it's your responsibility to make sure you get the right one. If less hassle is more important than more money, just going to the dealer is easiest.

Good luck!

Yes it has to go to the dealership as there is a chip in the key and the engine will not start. so why not go back to the place you bought your car and tell them they key will not work and ask them for another one

buy blank key online, ie ebay ($5~$10) or up to ~$50 for fancy ones

call local key smith, or lock smith who has honda, vw, or lexux key cutter, they are the same, and ask how much, usually $25~$50 if you bring your own blank key. that's if you live in downtown.
