When I bought my truck it had a really stupid sounding exhaust on it. Sounded like a weed eater. So I just got the exhaust cut off at a muffler shop for about $30 and sold the exhaust to some 15 year old to put on his Honda. I can tell you that your Scion will be louder but it won't sound like a muscle car or anything. If you do get straight pipe and don't like it you can get a cheap exhaust that you prefer.

Straight pipe is illegal. It is too loud. And you need the catalytic converter to pass DEQ.

Plus straight pipe allows valves to cool too fast when you coast, like down hill, and they can warp.

Some back pressure is good, and things like glasspaks can muffle without restriction. Bends also reduce noise without any negative. The correct exhaust system is tuned to the exact right length.

The exhaust tone flips and crosses back up the intake, where it flips again. It is not just a matter of being straight pipe, but the proper length.
