Default Why is did 2011 Scion XB loose almost 100 miles of gas mileage?

I have a 2011 Scion XB, and it was involved in a minor collision. Prior to the collision I was, according to the computer, I was averaging 310 per fill which goes to 28 miles per gallon. Was this accurate? No, it?s an est. but I did keep my own records. On my records I was averaging about 270-280 per tank fill up, that?s a 24-25 miles per gallon. Now, I?ve had this car since 2011. I?ve driven in hot and cold, summer and winter, fast and slow, but I always averaged250 miles plus. After my accident which happened in August 2013, my mileage dropped almost 20%. I don?t get it, why? According to the collision, I won?t say their name, but they are AAA approved, they are telling me it?s because it?s mid-summer and that I am using my AC and those two together will bring down my mileage dramatically. Well, I toughed it out, I drove without AC, and guess what? my mileage dropped. I am not a mechanic, I am a photographer. But I do have common sense. Something is wrong. What can I do? Or should I do. Oh, and my mechanic is a contractor to the collision center who repairs the engine, and he agrees with them. So I need a new mechanic.

fuel mileage will go down like crazy if your air intake filter is filthy, if you have a restriction in your exhaust system like a bend/kink from the accident. or if the catalyting converter shattered and now its just a plug. very likely if you hopped a curb or got rear ended, or if the electronics are off such as a bad oxygen sensor. also your tire pressure should be around 32-34 psi. if you have like 25psi or less mpg blows. do you have any check engine lights on?
