Default My Camry won't start normally.

Hi Camryans,

My Camry 1995 won't start normally . For the past 5 days the only way
I could start it was turning the key and pushing the gas pedal at the
same time. Without the gas pedal, it's just crancking and nothing
happens -- even after a long highway drive when I stop and turn off
the ignition, go to , say a store, come back and... well you get the
picture.
I'm wondering if this has something to do with the battery or the
ignition system itself. My battery is pretty old, about 5 years old,
and it was completely depleted a few times (left the lights on, and so
forth). I'd be glad if it was just the battery problem. What do you
think.
Thank you in advance for your help.

Serge

If it cranks over at normal speed, it isn't the battery. It could be
the cold start circuit or a dirty Idle Air Control Valve (IAV).

Hi Leftie, thanks a bunch for your input. I just ried to keep the
ignition key in the turned position for a little longer, and after a
few cranks the engine does start without depressing the gas pedal. But
before it starts there's a loud successive clicking noise on my right
side under the hood somewhere. It lasts for a few second before the
engine starts. Does this tell you of anything?

Clicking is usualy the starter not getting enough voltage, get the
battery fully tested, its free, and clean the cables and battery
terminals. 5 yrs is all many batteries give.

As Ransley says, it's low power to the starter, or possibly a worn
starter engagement drive. Since you have two different problems with one
thing in common, though, I'd look at the battery and cables first. It
could be that you have a less than perfectly tuned engine that's just a
little reluctant to start, and that extra cranking is showing you a weak
battery or loose/corroded cables. BTW, I gave you the wrong acronym for
Idle Air Control - it's "IAC."

Funny, my Camry also began having starting problem around 10 years age.
I just bought a new battery and a rebuilt starter.

Yours is most likely the battery problem, but those are sometimes
caused by other issues, like alternator. Given your car's age, I'd get
the entire starting system checked out, especially if you plan to keep
your car a while.

When's the last time the spark plugs were replaced? Worn plugs
will make it hard(er to start.
