Default gas cap door problem - 1999 Camry

When trying to fill up our '99 Camry with gas, I noticed that the
lever to open the gas cap door doesn't work anymore. My wife has to
pull the lever and I have to pry the door open, simultaneously.
Works, but it's a pain.

Anyone experience this problem?

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Michael

Yes. Adjust the "spring" (alright, it's not a spring, per se, just a angled
piece of metal) in the gas cap door so that it creates more resistance when
you close the door. The fact
that you are able to pry the door open indicates that pulling the lever DOES
cause the little plastic pin to retract.
Insufficient spring pressure must be the problem unless a hinge is binding.

Thanks - I'll give that a shot.

The spring thing on my Camry broke and it cost about $2 to replace.

I took a look, and noticed my plastic spring broke right off.

I had some spare magnets lying around, so I placed them so they repel
each other - one on the door, one above the gas cap. Calibration took
awhile, but it works fine now...

I wrapped the magnets in electrical tape so if they grab the gas
refill nozzle, they won't spark and ruin my day...

Thanks,

Michael

As already mentioned, you can go to the parts department and get a new
spring for a few dollars. It took me about 2 minutes to install it.
