Default Need immediately help - 99 camry engined seized suddenly.

Hello Everybody,

I have 99 Toyota Camry LE v4. It has 45 miles on it and 4 1/2 years
old. I changed my oil last month. I was hearing rattle noise for the
past two days. It was so interminent. I still don't know whether it is
from my car or from automobile next to me whenever I hear the rattle
noise. I was taking exit from the highway and all of a sudden i see
the engine light turned on and the car grandually stopped. While it
was slowing down I saw the battery and oil light also turning on. I
tried to start the car but no luck. I towed the car to my apartment.
This is my first car and I don't have enough experience with the
technical knowledge of the car. I drive around 12 miles during
weekdays and around 100 miles during weekend. I drive around 800 to
1000 miles per month and change my oil every 3 months. I go to the
same toyota dealer everytime to change the oil from the time I
purchased the car. I do major service every year.

Couple of weeks back I met with a small accident. It was rear end
collision in a traffic light. My front bumper cover got damaged. The
car was running fine after the incident but I immediately took the car
to the dealer. They said the front bumper cover was damaged and the
dealer replaced the same with the new one. They also mentioned that
there was nothing else happend to the engine or rest of the car.

So I don't know whether the problem is becasue of the accident or with
the engine itself. Please help me to know what the information I need
to find out before taking the car to the dealer. I don't want to get
ripped off any further.

Thanks

Given what appears to be other people's experiences described on this
newgroup, and as confirmed by my personal experience getting stuck on the
highway, I'll bet the water pump seized up and then took the timing belt
with it.

Default Thanks! - Re: Need immediately help - 99 camry engined seized suddenly.

Hello Everybody,

The oil and water levels are all in good level. I just had my oil
change a month before. Larry was right. The water pump seized. Luckily
I was under 5 yr power train/engine warranty. The dealer did the
service and it covered by the warranty. After this incident I always
have this feeling that my car may stop at any time during driving. I
hope I will be out of this pretty soon. The dealer also adivced me to
change the timing belt since he noticed wear and tear of my timing
belt during water pump replacement. He mentioned that he can change
the timing belt at the discounted rate since the part of the engined
has to be dismandled to replace the water pump. He quoted around $125
to change the timing belt. My car was already in its 50k miles. I
think as per the manual I have to change the timing belt at 60k. So I
decided to go ahead and change the timing belt. I checked with my
collegues about replacing timing belt for $125 and some of them
suggested that it was a good deal. Let me know your comments also. I
got the car back with the new pump and timing belt. It runs very good.
Thanks for all your help.

Did the motor seize, did it overheat, did they only need to replace the
pump.
Of course the belt is ng it wore down on a seized pump. Why should you
pay. Warranty should cover it, id think

Yes the service manager mentioned that only the motor seized. So they
replaced only the pump and nothing else. I repeatedly asked him many
times is there any other damage becauase of water pump seizure. He
said no. I did asked him why I should pay for the timing belt. He
mentioned there was no damange for any other parts because of water
pump seize. While he was replacing the water pump he noticed that my
timing belt has got wear and tear as per my mileage which is around
48K. He mentioned that around 60K it needs to be changed as per the
manual. Since the engine is dismandled to replace water pump he said
he can replace timing belt at the same time for a discounted rate
which is $125. Please comment..

Thanks

You just said the motor seized , you do mean only the pump, yes. You may
have oveheated the motor, keep an eye on it to see if anything
develops, leaks , rough running, water in oil. pay for the belt , you
are lucky it could have been worse.

I would check your maintenance schedule in the book provided to you. It may
call for a timing belt change at 90K, not 60K. Depends on how long you plan
to keep the car.

Thanks for the responses. The service manager said the motor pump
seized. Can you tell me where is the placement of the motor pump so
that I can check for any oil leaks, running water etc as mentioned? I
am not very knowledgeable in vehicle parts and placement (as you can
see from my previous posts). Any links to diagrams is greatly
appreciated. Thanks again for all your help.
