Default antenna wont retract

94 Camry LE 2.2 153K miles

The antenna doesn't retract anymore. For years it wouldn't retract all
the way, about 3 inches would be left. Now it just stays up and you
don't hear the motor for it doing anything.

What should I check first?

Can get a replacement at PEP BOYS (Manny Joe and Jack; or was that Larry,
Curly and Moe) for about 18.00 and save yourself the postage.
