Default 89 3S-FE Question

I have an '89 Camry 3S-FE and it's begun to sputter ever so slightly as
of late. I don't notice any real loss of power in acceleration, but it
sounds pretty irregular while it's idling.

I asked the guy at the Advance Auto Parts store and he said it could
just be plug wires. I replaced the wires (figured it was a good idea
anyway, since it has 211,000 miles on it). After putting nice new plug
wires on it, it still sputters slighty (though I did notice it ran only
slightly smoother).

I noticed when I took the vaccum hose off that the inside of the EFI
"thing" (words fail me), the first 3-4 inches of the inside of it are
coated in a beautiful oily grime. Could air intake be my real problem
and I'm just barking up the wrong tree with the plugs and wires?

I would appreciate greatly any advice anyone could offer.

Thanks!
Jason

I hope you replaced plugs also, it could be so many things at that
mileage , electrical, fuel , or mechanical.

Have you changed the distributor cap and rotor? With 211K, the electrodes
are probably worn down to the point of being non-existent. The distributor
on my '91 Camry was changed at 117K. I should have changed it long before
then.

JR
