Default OT; important Phone INFO by GOOGLE

i just got this notice from a friend today and privacy is an issue to me as
well as many others, this is true and it does work, i tried it on several
numbers i knew.
forward this to whoever you may think would be interested and talk about it
to whoever doesn't have internet access that may be close to you and may
also enjoy their privacy. when you do forward this around, please just keep
my e-mail outta the loop, thanks......

mike.............

Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can
type someone's telephone number into the search bar
and hit enter and then you will be given a map to
their house. Everyone should be aware of this! Note
that you can have your phone number removed or
blocked. Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing
my telephone number in google.com. My phone number
came up, and when I clicked on the MapQuest link, it
actually mapped out where I live. This is quite scary.

Please look up your own number. Read below for
details. Think about it--if a child, gives out his/her
phone number to someone they can actually now look it
up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues
are obvious, and alarming. In order to test whether
your phone number is mapped, go to:
http://www.google.com/ / > Type your phone number in
the search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter.
If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your
private information, simply click on your phone
number. Removal takes 48-hours. If you are unlisted in
the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a
good idea just to check. If your number does come up
if you hit map, it will show you a direct map to your
house... Please forward on to friends and family
If that don't work just type www.google.com

That is the regular google search engine.

It looks like your number has to be posted somewhere on the net. I tried
it with a couple comapnies I work for and they came up, but friend's
numbers drew nothing. >

if you're unlisted, it will not show up, but every person i tried that is
listed in the phone book came up no matter what state.

Google isn't the 'bad guy' here. Google's implementation is a very
handy telephone number lookup application; and it is much easier to use
than the reverse lookups in Switchboard, 411, and others. If you don't
want your telephone number, address, etc. to be available to the public,
just get an unlisted (or unpublished) number.

Reverse number lookups have been available for more than 40 years,
starting with the old Polk city directories ("criss cross"). All that
has changed is the technology and the ease with which the information
can be obtained.

Of course this will do nothing to block 411.com, switchboard.com,
anywho.com, verizon.com, reversephonedirectory.com, whitepages.com,
phonedirectorysearch.com, or the other hundreds of applications that do
the same thing.

Don't want your phone number, name and address to be publically
available? Get an unlisted or unpublished number.

i think you're missing the point, why do they need to apply it so any person
can get door to door instant access to anyone's home?

mike.........

I'm not missing the point, Mike. They (Google) aren't doing anything
that hasn't been done before. YOU are the one that decides to make your
telephone number and address available to the public. If you don't want
the information to be public, tell your telephone service provider. You
might also want to notify your credit card companies, banks, state
drivers license bureau, and anyone else who sells this information to
third parties, and "opt out" under the provisions of their federally
required privacy policies.
