Default What is correct temp rating for thermostat 88 Camry?

One more question: I need to replace the thermostat on a 1988
Camry 4-cyl. Took the old thermo to Pep Boys, and they looked it up
on the computer. They brought out a Stant thermo..... but although the
flange OD was correct, it was about 1 1/2 to 2 in long (deep)...about
three times as long as the old part. Also the old part is stamped 160
degree, while the new Stant is a 180 deg thermo. Come to think of
it, aren't most sedans designed to run 180 degrees? The counter-person
said that is the only part shown for Camry 4-cyl through 91 or 92. SO
Can someone with the manual please tell me if this 180 degree stant
thermo sounds like the correct one? It could be some mechanic in the
past before I bought the car installed an incorrect one.

Oh just get the right part already.

If you like, you can call up the local dealer and bargain with them...
otherwise, wait until you need some other hardware, and combine the
order to get free shipping (over $100).

160 is wrong , the lowest emissions and highest fuel economy are only
reached at higher temps than 160. 160 is marginal to cook out oils
pollutants like water which ruins motors by turning oil to sludge. You
are best off using a Toy thermostat, several non toy units I had were
complete junk never sealing right. The Haynes list for temp is 190 and
fully open at 212. Just get a real Toy thermostat and you wont have
another issue to worry about.
