Default 99 Camery check engine light comes on then goes off after a few days

The check engine light comes on and stays on for a few days then goes off.
Would the code or codes stay stored in the system till cleared

For codes that require more than one trip to trigger, the codes will
stay there for a while. Otherwise, if there are no problems after a
trip and the required diagnostics tests were made, one-trip codes are
cleared and the MIL light is turned off.

Go to Autozone. They have free loaner OBD-II readers that will help you
pull the code and clear the MIL light.

Let us know what the codes were.

If it comes and goes, then it may be the faulty gas cap (can hold
pressure or vent vacuum).
If not the cap then may be bad air/gas separator check valves $$$$$,
but the light would pretty much be on all the time. Do write down the
code if it comes back just to be sure.

My similar problems stopped when I stopped putting in more fuel after the
first "auto" shut off at the pumps.
