Default Timing belt

just a general question about timing belts.

how does replacing it affect the performance of the vehicle?

Wolfgang is right. Unless it's way overdue or happens to get a
defective timing belt that stretched, then you should notice little or
no difference. But by 50-60K the belt would start to show it age.

And old belt or a defective belt stretches a little and retards timing.
It makes your car sluggish and wastes fuel. Toyota updated the timing
belts since the last years of the 5SFE, but I would still use only a
Gates belt. www.gates.com
