Default 'truly superior' . . . busting 40 MPG myth

Apparently I'm not the only one to notice there is a lot of 'smoke'
being blow about by false mileage claims:

The article concludes with:

"It's an undeniable accomplishment—and a sign that the automotive
industry has finally become serious about fuel economy—that there are
so many 30-plus mpg models available today for less than $20,000. (The
MSRP for the Honda Insight, by the way, is $18,200.) Still, for
drivers in search of truly superior efficiency—barring plug-in models
like the Chevy Volt and Nissan LEAF—you still can't beat a good ol'
hybrid."

I love it, "truly superior efficiency ... you still can't beat a good
ol' hybrid."

Sofar, the Insight and the Prius are the top cost effective fuel
efficient solutions for commutes
which take over 40 minutes and 8 miles long which do not require a
signficant cargo payload.
When Hyundai starts selling hybrids, I expect they will create serious
competition for
both Honda and Toyota. It will be an interesting to see what
transpires...

How will the 2012 Civic hybrid fit in on that score?

How about on the basis of frequent short trips around town?

When the Insight engine and drive train get transplanted, the Civic
will again be competitive. Now if they can noodle out how to get
through the 2008 EPA testing, they'll be in excellent shape for the
future. I especially hope they get the traction batteries relocated so
the rear seat of the Civic folds down.

As for Hyundai, I saw their "blue motion" system at Detroit in January
2009. A single motor/generator system, it looks to be a game changer
when it eventually shows up:
