Default Racing Gets into Full Swing with Toyota Victories

“It was fun,” said Truex. “I can’t say enough about the guys on this Auto Owners Camry. Everybody back at JGR (Joe Gibbs Racing) really went to work this week to try to get back to what we used to do here. Just hats off to the guys – James (Small, crew chief) and everybody. Just an unbelievable race car. We were side-by-side. That’s kind of the way these things go sometimes. I’m really proud of the effort. Super-fast race car and feel like we’re back in the game now.” Martin Truex Jr. Christopher Bell earned another top-10 with a seventh-place finish, his fifth of his rookie season. In the doubleheader NASCAR Xfinity Series events at Kentucky, Riley Herbst was the top Toyota driver, finishing runner-up and 10th, respectively, in the pair of races which were both won by Austin Cindric. The second-place finish on Thursday matches a career-best in the series by Herbst. It’s cool and kind of a shot in the arm for this No. 18 Monster Energy team,” said Herbst, following his second-place finish. “We’ve had speed, we just haven’t been able to finish these races and we did that.” Riley Herbst Three Tundra drivers finished in the top-10 in the NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series race won by Sheldon Creed at Kentucky on Saturday. Points leader Austin Hill finished fifth followed by rookies Christian Eckes (sixth) and Derek Kraus (eighth). “We just kind of swung for the fence,” said Hill, of his race. “From my point, we were really good. I actually thought we had a really good shot at winning the race if we could have got a little more track position. I felt like our truck could get through traffic a little bit better than most of the other trucks. All-in-all, we are consistent. I’m itching really bad for a win with how good our season has been and how good we are running each and every week. I know the wins will come. I just have to be patient. Just keep digging -- keep fighting hard.” Austin Hill Ty Gibbs earned his second ARCA Menards Series win of the year (third across all ARCA series) after leading 59 laps (of 100) at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday. Michael Self (third), Drew Dollar (fifth) and Ryan Repko (sixth) also earned top-10 results. NHRA Doug Kalitta became the second Top Fuel driver in NHRA history to earn 700 round wins on his way to the finals in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event in Indianpolis on Sunday. The Lucas Oil Raceway event was NHRA’s first race back since February. In reaching his third consecutive final round this season, Kalitta stretched out his Top Fuel point lead to 111 points over second-place Steve Torrence. Fellow Toyota Top Fuel driver Antron Brown advanced to the semifinals before falling to Kalitta, while J.R. Todd drove his Camry to the Funny Car semifinals.

Toyota drivers dominated three POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget League events, earning three victories and capturing eight of nine top-three podium finishes. Buddy Kofoid won Friday’s event at Humboldt Speedway as Kaylee Bryson made history when she matched the best-ever national midget feature finish by a woman in placing second. Ace McCarthy then swept a pair of races at Valley Speedway on Saturday and Sunday.
