Can I fit a larger engine in my 4runner without swapping transmissions?

I have a 1995 Toyota 4runner with a 3.0 liter V6. Needless to say it is very underpowered. The next generation was equipped with a 3.4 liter V6. If both generations have the same transmission, shouldn't I be able to just drop the engine in without any significant modifications? How can I tell if the transmission is strong enough?

It might work but you are going to have to swap more than just the engine. You will need to swap the computer and wiring harness. as the newer engines would be OBD-2.

Michelle is right - but i think the newer computer is NOT going to be able to communicate with the old transmission. most probably Toyota also made internal modifications to clutches and gears to handle the bigger engine. you better just get both the engine and trans as a matched set - along with the computer and wiring harness. its a lot of trouble and expense to go for another 15% or so power. if you think you are "underpowered now" you might not notice all that much difference. money might be better spent on some lower (higher numerical) diff gears to give you more usable power.
