Could you answer a question about these new-fangled keys with a computer chip?

I dropped my keys in a puddle and feared I messed up the chip. I ran inside and put the key in the microwave for 90 seconds. My car won't start. A new key costs a small fortune and I would have to get the car towed. Any suggestions?

I put it in the microwave to dry it out

Ok first putting in the microwave killed the computer chip inside the key.

A microwave generates an electro magnetic pulse which destroys the chip

Here is how the chip worked ( when it did)

on your key is a small chip that tells the car that it is the right key and allows the car to start.

Inside the lock is a receiving chip so when you insert the key it knows that it is a proper key.

If say someone with another key from another car tired to start the car, it would not start as the cars computer would not sense the chip as being the right one to your car and will not let the car start.

My advice is get another key. Be leave me getting it wet or drooping it does not hurt the chip, but nuking it in a microwave did.

I would suggest that a person who has the mental capacity to put car keys in the microwave stay off the road.

An automotive locksmith can help you, and do it much cheaper than an automotive shop, or car dealer. They won't have to tow your car, they can do it on site.

Generally, an electronic car key is well protected from water, but yes, putting the key in the microwave did ruin the chip.

Depending on the make/model and year of your car, the price will vary for key "re-fitting", it is expensive, yes, but not as expensive as your car dealer or mechanic (who will call a locksmith and jack up the price to you).

Be sure to call a reputable locksmith shop, one who had their business in town for years. If you can't find one, check www.aloa.org to find a reputable locksmith.
