Default Why do people way over charge for Toyota Tacoma's?

My BF is looking into purchasing a newer Tacoma. At least 01 or up (he prefers the 05 and up style but they are very costly).

Anyways I have been looking all over my state (Oregon) for prices. No matter where I look all the trucks are 2-5 thousand (or more!) over Kelly Blue Book value! We refuse to pay over kbb value for something because its a waste of money especially if its way over like all these trucks have been.

I don't understand this. Its like every one/place that sells these trucks hordes them at a higher price then they are worth so people are forced to pay more. A $10,000 truck is selling for $15,000! Is it like this everywhere or is it just my area?

I guess it doesn't help that he wants a crew cab (4-door) 4x4 V6 which are some of the more expensive models. We need the extra room (4 door) for when I start showing dogs and traveling so it has to be 4 door.

Is there anywhere I am going to find a Tacoma like this for sale around kbb price or are they all going to rip offs?

Advice would be great! Thanks for reading.

and to add you would think because of the recall they might have gone down in value a little bit. Well I guess not since people are still asking an arm and a leg for them!

ETA: No need to be RUDE! and no I will gladly pay someone for what a car is worth but not $5000 over what it books for I am sorry. I mostly just wanted to know if other people have experienced this in your area. It seems that ONLY Tacomas are like this no Ford trucks, no Chevy trucks ONLY Toyota Tacomas! Why?

LOL car lots buy cars for trade in value not kbb retail value. I know how business works. I have bought 2 cars at a lot which both were kbb value. Its not only the car lots its just people in general selling them. I have seen car lots over charge for other makes, but nothing like these tacomas. I would help him but I have a Scion TC I am paying off myself (which I got from a car lot at kbb value). I am not a moron and I am not bitching I simply want to know if other people have experienced just tacomas being more than kbb value in their area. So far everyone has failed to answer it.

Nice try Anthony I have owned several toyotas and 2 toyota 4x4s (pre-tacoma). They were all great cars.

If you were selling something, and knew you could get a good price for it, wouldn't you sell it for a high price?

Damn right you would.

So why do you criticize anyone else for doing the same? They're out to make a profit. That's the whole point of a business.

As far as KBB, what does that have to do with anything?

The website clearly states that it is a GUIDE. Not an actual list of what the vehicle is worth. It is only to be used to represent prices you MIGHT find.

Want an example? A 1995 Supra Twin Turbo: KBB around $15,000.

Good luck finding anyone to sell one for less than $25,000. Does that mean their price is wrong? No. It means that KBB is exactly what it says. ONLY A REFERENCE. Actual prices will vary.

I totally agree. Places should give up all chance of making any profit at all, and just sell things at the prices you want.

Obviously that's the correct solution to the sitatuation.

As far as Toyota's recall...it has nothing to do with the Tacoma, so why would their prices be affected?

That's just stupid.

Kelley Blue Book, or Edmunds, or NADA, or any other 'pricing guide' is just a guide. It has no legal standing, and people are free to set whatever price they think is fair.

If you don't want to pay the seller's price, then go look somewhere else!.

Most dealers charge around $5000 more for used cars than KBB says that it's worth.

They make a profit off of their cars and they want as large a profit as possible, nobody said you had to pay what the dealer asks, it's called negotiating. However, you're not going to pay KBB value for any car at any used car lot. Why would they sell you a car for the same amount that they paid for it? That isn't how business works.

Since you said you need the room for your dogs and crap but yet it's his truck...why don't you help him pay for the truck? Instead of just griping about the system.

FYI, tacomas are not the only vehicle affected by this 5k markup scheme, all vehicles are.

I gave Jack a thumbs up because he is being sarcastic people, please stop being good at being ignorant, thanks. First answer for best answer btw.

Anthony's answer= Slander.

8 Thumbs down for most of the answers that make sense? Looks like our troll anthony has a few accounts, especially since he got 9 thumbs up LOL.

they are overpriced because of their false reputation for quality.

you dont want a toyota vehicle, and you definately dont want their trucks. they are plagued with problems.

they are effected by the recalls depending on the year. they are also effected by oild sludge, though not admitted by toyota, and worst of all they have the worst frames in history. people with 2007's already complaining they snap in half.

if you buy one be sure to have the frame inspected. and check its record for previous engine work.

goodluck.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

UPDATE:

you said were. and if they were good, why would you have needed to own several? my car is now 19 years old and only needed 1 waterpump(was leaking at 230,000k), and a drive shaft(my fault). my others are over 10 years old, and no repairs yet. i dont need to get rid of my vehicles thats why i dont care about re-sale value. how long you kept those toyota's? a few years?

well these pictures and video's do not lie!

i still wish you good luck! lol

No idea why they overcharge. They do the same thing in my area, I had to go check if they did this here as well. They averaged $3000 - $5000 over kbb. I guess people are willing to overpay for them. I bought my Van for $1000 under kbb value. I refused to pay more and the dealership finally gave up trying to get more when I got ready to walk out. Hope you find one you like with a reasonable price tag.

Simply put - they don't overcharge - if people don't OVERPAY. The price of any used vehicle is what the market will pay. There is a lot of demand for trucks in that general price range and more buyers - than there are trucks! Car lots also "mark up" prices to give negotiating room and for old low value trades. And - in the hope that a sucker walks in and pays the full price. You should be able to negotiate 10-15% off the asking price - but you have to stick to you guns and WALK OUT. Get in your car and Drive away. Chances are they will chase you down at the street or call you next couple days to come get the deal.

Its not true that Dealers pay BB when they buy cars/trucks....they pay somewhere close to trade in..(if your lucky)...so if they are asking 5k over RETAIL value then they are padding it quite a bit...but they also know people are going to try to talk them down so they mark them up hoping to still make a good profit ...its a buyers market right now for cars/trucks....the ball is in your court so to speak with the way the economy is....dealers have been hit almost as hard as realtors

I feel your pain...I've actually been looking at some Tacomas as well...somewhere in the 05 to 06 range...and honda CRVs....they all are still in the 14k to 18k range ....

I've found some good deals on CraigsList.....you just have to play the game and be willing to walk away with out the truck if you can't get what you want : )

also toyotas just like hondas ......just hold value ....they are known to go into the 200k mile mark with out major issues

Toyotas in general tend to sell for a high value for years. They are good quality and will run for years with no problems.

Recently, before I purchased my Mazda, I was really hoping to purchase a 2000-2002 Toyota 4runner. KBB for roughly 8,000-9,000$, 11,000$ or so for the 2002, and I could rarely find one for under 10,000-13,000$, most of the 2002s being about 14,000$-15,000$. KBB is just a guide as to what a vehicle might be worth. In reality, people charge what others are willing to pay.

I like to purchase through private owners. They tend to ask far less then most lots will. If you have the available cash, or the credit to go through a bank for financing, that is what I would do. I personally love Craigslist, I've seen many great deals from private owners on there. People who are simply trading up or really need the money.

BTW, I wouldn't say EVERY lot is a rip off. I got my 2006 Mazda 3i through a small local lot. One owner car, when it was purchased it had every upgrade possible EXCEPT for automatic lights added. It was purchased for 22,000$ or 26,000$, can't remember. It's in excellent condition, and I got it for 3,000$ UNDER KBB.
