Does a 4x4 still get bad mileage even when 4WD is turned off?

Default Does a 4x4 still get bad mileage even when 4WD is turned off?
I'm looking to get a 4x4 Tacoma, but I was checking out the website and I noticed that 4WD makes the mileage go down by around 6 MPG highway. Do they test mileage with the 4WD engaged? Would the mileage still be that terrible while in 2WD?

Yes because the mileage relies more on the engine rather than the drive.

Toyota is known for gettin good gas mileage... i have a 2003 tacoma with 305,000 miles!!!! and im still gettin great gas mileage. i live in montana and i have 4x4 engaged 80% of the time. i get around 20 mpg in-town and 28 mpg highway with 4x4 engaged.. the mileage will only be better with 2wd engaged. GREAT VEHICLE BY THE WAY,,, GET IT!! you will love the reliability.

The mileage listed IS with the 4 wheel drive off and yes it will go down dramatically with it engaged. Be careful of answers in this section since most will come from people that work for Toyota in some way like repairs or sales and they profit from you buying one so they will tell you ANYTHING to get you to buy one even if it old.

the milage is tested in 2wd. The reason 4x4s of any brand have lower mpg is because of lower gearingand additional weight of transfer case and driveshafts. Also being higher off the ground increases wind drag. All these factor together to pull down ur mpg.































You can expect to get about 19 mpg combined out of a tacoma 4x4. That's in 2wd, and not considering your "off road" time.
