...it only does with? 1996 toyota corolla that when I'm at a stop light with the a/c on the car wants to turn off but with the a/c off it doesn't do it

A/C uses a LOT of electrical power, and at idle your motor spins the accessory belts at a slower rate, producing less power. There is a valve that makes your car idle higher when the a/c comes on to make sure there's enough power, I believe it's called the A/C Idle Valve, that's most likely your culprit.

The idle is probably too low or the ac motor is using too much power causing the alternator to do more work in supplying electricity to the electrical componants.















Just turn the idle speed up, that should do the trick
