How much should it cost to fix a broken steering rod on 1999 Toyota Camry?
I know nothing about cars. Yesterday, there was a snap sound and my front tires were angled inward toward each other and the center of the car. I had it towed. The mechanic called this morning and said it is the steering rod. It broke and the part will cost $360. He said the ESTIMATED total cost to fix it is $1559.00. That is the cost of tow ($75), plus the diagnostic test thing ($130), plus the part ($360), leaving $994 for labor. Is that right? It seems obscenely high to me. I also need to get new tires for my car pretty soon which is gonna be at least another $450. I am considering just selling off the car if this is the case and putting the money from it toward something different. What do you suggest? Is it worth paying $1559 to get it fixed? Is it worth sinking 2 grand in the next 6 months into an 11 year old Camry with 130,000 miles? Help me out please.
