Default My '96 Toyota Camry is hard to start and stay running when cold?
Once you get it started the gas pedal must be depressed for the engine to stay running. After it warms up for a minute or so it is fine. I sprayed some carb cleaner into the Idle air control valve to try to clean it up while the engine was at a high idle. That seemed allow the car to cold start better for a few days. Now it is happening again. I may take it off the throttle body and clean it better. I am going to check the engine coolant temp sensor before i do that. Any other suggestions?

fuel treatment added to fuel tank cleans inside fuel system spray cleaner cleans outside or around edges a bottle or two of any fuel treatment might help

Try cleaning the throttle body itself, especially the area where the throttle plate contacts the throat and also the idle passage (look for a small hole in the throat between the entrance and the throttle plate). Not a guaranteed fix, but dirty throttle bodies often show up as bad cold idle.

Right on. I would check the coolant temp sensor circuit. If the sensor is failed or broken it won't go in to open loop mode for starting and will die until it warms up. The idle air control valve may also be clogged like you thought. Take off the throttle body and using carb cleaner clean the entire idle air control valve door and coolant passages. The coolant temp sensor in question would be the one of the water neck near the distributor.
