Life is complex. When taking into account, say acceleration, the change in speed is dependent on air resistance as well as propulsion. There is always more than one one component acting upon something at any given time. In those basic calculus problems where a tank is being drained, the instantaneous rate of drainage is effected by fluid viscosity, which is left out of most problems.
