My friend has a 1989 Toyota box truck, it's a great truck and run great but he worries that something might go wrong with his transmission because when he puts it into gear it's a little over 2 rpms. What could cause a high idle?
My friend contacted the dealership and they told him it does not have an idle air control motor
My first diagnostic check on this issue would be this. Purchase a can carburetor cleaner. Put the little straw spray thing on the nozzle. This stuff is flammable so do the next step on a cool engine. Start engine, spray the carb cleaner slowly around gasket areas and vacuum lines. Listen for any idle change. The vacuum will suck the carb cleaner in and change the idle, or stall the engine. You should be able to pinpoint your trouble with this procedure. Keep in mind this stuff will catch on fire if sprayed on hot exhaust or an electrical spark. I keep a fire extinguisher handy. Good luck.
Throttle body covered with carbon, throttle return spring bad or sticking throttle cable. To clean the throttle body, start by taking off the throttle body and clean all the passages and everywhere there is carbon, then install a new TB gasket.
