My 1998 Toyota 4 Runner is making a hissing sound/overheats what could be the problem?
My 4 Runner makes a hissing sounds when I drive it. It also leaks coolant and has been overheating. I assume this is a leak somewhere? What are some possibilities and how much would it cost to fix the problem? Thanks
Leaking coolant will cause the engine to overheat when the coolant level gets too low to do its job. Continuing to drive the car with this condition will result in servious engine damage, unless you stop the car and have the leak repaired right away, but you're gone somewhere to use a computer. At this age your engine may have a leaky water pump allowing the coolant level to drop to a dangerous low level. The radiator is boiling over since there is too much heat and pressure. Do not remove the radiator cap with the engine hot like this or you will get scalded. Do not add any water until the engine cools off. If the leak is small, you may be able to fill the radiatro and drive a few miles before coolant gets too low again.
find the leak, and if it is in the radiator, replace it, well, replace anything that is leaking. don't drive it until it is fixed, it can cause the head gasket to blow and that is a pricey repair.
