It's a lot like the old one. They're very similar on the outside, but the interior is where most of the changes are. I like some aspects of the new one better, like the wood instead of painted plastic and how all the stuff on the dash isn't hidden behind doors anymore. I wouldn't buy it though. This is what I'd get:

It's similar to the Avalon in price (the LaCrosse give you a bit more for your money), size, and nearly every way, but it's bolder looking, whereas the Avalon is boring. It actually makes a statement. The styling inside and out is better. The platform its built on is German engineered, and the styling was done as a collaboration between the GM's American and Chinese design departments. It was designed to take on Lexus, and won:

Reliability for the LaCrosse is also tops. Buick was rated the most reliable make by JD.Power's last year, and was third this year. For a car's reliability to be considered "much worse than average", all it takes is a problem rate of 3%, so when it comes to reliability you are splitting hairs. The Buick will be slightly better though, because it has been consistently rated over Toyota for the last few years. For the money the Buick is slightly cheaper, sou you could save a grand or two, or just put it into options. You have to compare the two. Go out and test them both, equip them the way you would want and get a quote, and see what fits you best.
