first.? She said that the car runs smoothly, except for the sounds when the engine first starts, and the sounds go away. What is wrong with the engine? Is it a little problem, big problem, or can just be left alone?

It could be just about anything, from the engine to an accessory. I would suggest staying away from this car. It's already 13 years old.

it is thirteen years old and to be honest it could be anything my advice is to check it out right. you can get all pre-purchasing tips on the internet however it sounds it may be anything from the shells on the crank shaft to just something like worn tappets. i would think get a mechanic.

Need more info about the sounds. It could be minor sound such as squeaky pulley or too tight of vales. As general, it is always good idea to take the car to a mechanic to have it inspect before you buy it. Ask the owner if you can take the vehicle to your mechanic.

Toyota will last you a very long time and problems tend to be very minor if the car is well taken care.

Depends on how well the owner has done Maintenance, sounds to me like a belt is loose or a Timing Belt Tensioner or bearing, should defiantly ask for records if he/she has any on maintenance. Ask more questions re guarding the upkeep on the vehicle, when fluids were changed and what not.
