Looking at an '88 owners manual, there are two buttons that can affect the shifting of the Supra 3.0 litre Automatic.
The first is the Overdrive Switch on the shifter handle. It should be kept "On" (pressed in) for the best fuel economy. In this position, the RPM's in top gear (4th in a 4 speed or 3rd in a 3 speed transmission) will drop and reduce fuel consumption. The only times that you would turn the Overdrive off, is if the transmission is shifting gears up and down continually as you drive up a slope, and if you desire to use engine braking as you slow down from highway speeds.
The second switch is "Driving Pattern Selector Switch". This switch allows you to control the transmission shift time. If the switch is pressed down the transmission will shift at higher RPM's giving more powerful acceleration. If it is out, the transmission will shift normally. For best fuel economy, this switch should be left in the out position.
Have fun with a great car.
