If you go to Toyota USA's FAQ site,
http://www.toyota.com/help/faq.html , and search for "timing" you will get this page titled "Timing Belt and Timing Chain":

A 2001 US Toyota Camry has a timing belt, NOT a timing chain or gear.
According to the "Timing Belt Recommendations" page,
http://toyota.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/t...GltaW5n&p_li=# , it should be replaced every 90,000 miles OR 6 years, whichever occurs first. (Since it is a 2001, and it is now 2008, you are over 6 years so you should've had the timing belt replaced at least once now by time, more if by mileage!)
