Default does a TOYOTA 4runner have a timing belt or chain?
i recently bought a 99 4runner and the salesmen told me that it had a timing belt so i had nothing to worry about, but recently my brother got a 4runner as well and my dad said that this salesman said that the 4runners have timing belts?? i need to know how to find out which one it has so i can save some money in the long run. ok thanks!

The 3.4 has a belt, the 2.7 has a chain.

timing chains go for the life of the car not belts. but even with a timing belt which only needs to be changed once in the cars like anyway, those 4runner engines are real workhorses and they have great lifespans usually well over 200k.

From what I can see, most 4runners after '95 are belts, but it depends on what type of 4runner you have (sr5, tacoma, T100). You can drive up to any auto parts store and ask someone that works there to check for you. They can look it up for you. Good luck ; )
