Default I have a 2004 Toyota Solara 4 cyl 31,000 miles when starting has a strong smell of gas fumes?
spark plugs and air filter were changed at 30,000 miles still have the gas fume smell which goes away after idleing for about 20 seconds or so.

Take it to a mechacic now!!!!!!!!!!!! Gas fumes can kill you.

I think Toyota would be very interested in that . 2004 is not old - talk to a dealer and ask if there is a recall or something like that . Get it fixed - this is not normal.

it sounds like the emission system canister valve is not working properly,this valve opens and closes to let fumes back into fuel tank.get it checked out !
