The earlier Avalons had a horrific failure that caused the oil to gel in the pans. No longer able to circulate the oil, the engines were utterly destroyed; Toyota had to replace the engines entirely.
Check to see whether this happened to your car; look up its VIN via Carfax. That's not free, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than being stuck with a dud car.
The Avalon itself is an excellent car; lots of reviewers make it sound like a Lexus that got badged as a Toyota. Big space, nice ride, plenty of power and top marks for quality.
'98 Avalons take regular gas. That's good. According to the EPA they get up to 27mpg, and for such a large car that's even better. Unfortunately, it's a Toyota so parts and repairs aren't cheap, but fortunately it's a Toyota so it won't need parts or repairs that often.
