Anything to improve the airflow will improve the mileage to some extent. So, yes, a mesh tailgate will impede the air flow less and improve the mileage. Of course, you may not see much of a difference around town, but you just might on the highway.
Using a mesh tailgate or with the solid tailgate down is a myth. It will not improve fuel economy. Leave the tailgate up. That is the best way to improve fuel economy. I know this sounds odd since you would think with the tailgate up you would induce more air resistance. I tried it with the gate up and down. Fuel economy does improve for about 10 miles per tank full.
