First, I have a Corolla, but I did a lot of objective comparison between the two before I bought the Corolla. The Corolla is cheaper, gets a little better mileage. The Civic is a bit more comfortable and has a few more bells and whistles. Otherwise their very similar in terms of resell value, quality (according to Consumer Reports), size, etc. I didn't check safety ratings or horsepower so I can't comment on that. I can say that the Corolla has a 127 HP engine which isn't going to win any drag races, but the car is very light so is has good power to weight ratio which gives it decent pickup. And the small-ish engine really improves the mileage (I get over 40mph highway).
The bottom line - their both very good cars, a couple of the best made. I'd go with which ever one you can get the best deal on. Hope that helped.
