They don't sell the Echo anymore, it's been replaced with the Yaris. The Yaris is both cheaper and slightly better on gas. Corolla stars slightly over 15,000 and Yaris around 12,000. I don't know the Yaris' mpg exactly but it's only slightly better than the Corolla. I do know that the Corolla is now being offered with 1,000 cash back while the Yaris is not being offered with any incentives. If you're buying used, the older Corollas are better on mpg than the newer ones-again, only slightly. Toyota.com can give you specs on those, and kbb.com can give used prices. Used Toyota's cost a little more than a domestic will because of the strong reputation for quality- which is true, they really do run forever, although newer models of domestics are MUCH better on quality and really have about caught up to the imports (although the imports have the better track record), so feel free to look around and know you are buying something that will last
