250,000 miles on a 5SFE engine isn't abnormal. These are workhorse engines known to get 400,000 + miles with proper care. Unforunately, there's not much in terms of performance parts. This is the same 2.2 liter engine used in the 1990-1991 Celica GT/GTS, the 1991-1996 MR2 non-turbo, and the 1992-2001 4cylinder.
Just keep the fluids changed (especially the oil and transmission fluid) and change the oil, air and fuel filters and you should be good to go. Also, have the timing belt changed if it hasn't been changed in the last 60,000 miles or you don't know when it was last changed. This will be a costly repair because along with the timing belt, it's recommended that you replace the waterpump and engine seals. The timing belt alone isn't too bad cost wise (around $150) but those other things will have you paying around $500-600 for the repair. trust me, It's worth the $500-600 to do after timing belt parts and labor, you're just paying for the parts since they are all located by the timing belt. Still, if you neglect the timing belt, it will break and leave you stranded. Good thing your engine is designed that it won't cause internal damage if the timing belt breaks like most engines will. Throw a new one on and go. Most engines will need an enine rebuild aftr that belt breaks. Kudos to Toyota for that.
You want to go fast? Do a 3S-GTE engine swap. Do a web search on 3SGT powered Camry. you'll see quite a few of them. This is the 2.0 liter twin cam turbo engine used in the 1991-1996 MR2 turbo and 1988-1993 Celica All-Trac turbo and it's comes from the factory at 200hp (your current engine is rated at 135 hp). You'll be smoking most people in a Camry. Also, this engine can be upgraded to put out crazy power. It will even destroy a V6 Camry. You won't stop smiling after that upgraded. Heck, I'm smiling just thinking about it, Good luck.
