1998 Camry starting problems?

My brother in law has a 1998 Toyota Camry, (4 cylindar) thats having problems starting. Its not the battery( a tow truck guy told us that) & getting a jump wont start it either. When he turns the key to start the car it makes a clicking noise. We think its the starter. He has even banged on it with a hammer & it still doesnt start.

Can anyone tell me if the problem is the starter & if it isnt what could the problem be?

You need to start by checking the battery terminals for corrosion. A bad connection will create too much resistance. Also check your fuses; there are some in the cabin under the dash, and some in the engine compartment. Check your owners manual. You can also check if there is a good ground to the engine block from the battery.

It could be the starter. easiest way to find out is to remove it and take it to a parts store where they can bench test it. I would go ahead and take the battery with, and have it tested as well.

IF YOU KNOW THAT THE BATTERY IS GOOD AND THE BATTERY TERMINALS ARE NOT CORRODED,THEN THAT MEANS THERE IS A STARTER MALFUNCTIONS.UNLESS YOUR STARTER IS BURNED IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED.THIS STARTER HAS CONTACTS THAT WEAR OUT AND NEED TO BE REPLACED.YOU WOULD NEED TO HAVE A PROFESSIONAL DIAGNOSE THIS PROBLEM FOR YOU TO SEE IF THIS IS YOUR CASE.DO NOT LET ANYONE BANG ON THE STARTER,THIS WILL NOT HELP AND COULD ACTUALLY CREATE A BIGGER PROBLEM.GOOD LUCK
