toyota cooling fan problem?

Default toyota cooling fan problem?
My 1992 Carina 2.0 is overheating due to the fan not coming on. Initially the fault was intermittent and it was only when I tapped the cooling fan temp (CTF)switch (at the bottom of the radiator) that it came on for a brief period allowing me to narrow down the fault. However, it does not come on at all now. When I disconnect the CTF, the fan will come on and run continually as long as the engine it on. When I reconnect, the fan stops. What is likely to be at fault, The CTF relay or the CTF switch or something else?

I would have thought that the switch is at fault - they're cheap enough to try one first, but usually the fan only runs when the wires to the switch are shorted, not disconnected.
