Why does the 09 corolla have an oil filter you can't change yourself?

Default Why does the 09 corolla have an oil filter you can't change yourself?
What was toyota thinking getting rid of the perfectly fine spin-on oil filter in favor of this strange cartridge thing? I called the dealership and removing it requires a special tool that is not available to the public at this time. Great. So you can't change your own oil now, you have to get soaked at the dealership each time, get cheap oil, and a dry filter put on by some kid so your engine can start dry for a few seconds each time. Sweet. Can someone please tell me why they did this? Were they just trying to give the toyota dealerships more service department profits, or was this just a thoughtless mistake?

You are correct, more profits to the dealer.















They made the Corolla so darned good, that there is not much profit from the sale of the car itself.















So by making the oil filter cartridge inaccessible or hard to do yourself, the dealer gets more of your business!















I expect that very soon, after market filter cartridge tools will be made available.















I sold a 98 Mercedes C230 Kompressor because MB wanted $100 for an oil change. Same deal, I couldn't service it myself!

I had a triumph TR7 and it came with a cannister type filter you are talking about it was a pain so I got a adapter kit that let me use regular filters this might be an option for you also.































Toyota has been using a cannister filter on their trucks also there seems to be mixed reviews. Some say its better in the long run for getting rid of bit of metal that accumulate others seem to think its a bit small and is tedious to change.

you can its called a oil filter cup you can get this at any auto parts store.
