Does a 2003 Toyota Echo have a timing belt?

We own a 2003 Toyota Echo (2 door) and under the hood (left side of the engine) appears to be making a noise as the engine runs. Whether idling or on the road. Almost sounds as if a heat shield is loose or something. I can't find anything on the exterior of the motor that is loose so I am thinking it's something internal.

My dad recommended having the timing belt replaced. It has 75,000 miles on it. However my wife seems to think the mechanic she used last said this car doesnt have a timing belt.

So we are confused.

Can anyone help ?

There isn't a belt. There is a timing chain that might cost you $260.00 or more to get replaced and that is with labor included in the $260.00. Dealerships might charge more. Good luck.

If you go to Toyota USA's FAQ site, http://www.toyota.com/help/faq.html , and search for "timing" you will get this page titled "Timing Belt and Timing Chain": http://toyota.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/t...i=&p_topview=1 , shows that the 2000-2005 Echo in the US had a timing CHAIN, and not a belt.

There is no prescribed replacement interval for a timing chain. IF it were a timing belt, Toyota recommends every 6 years or 90,000 miles, whichever occurs first. See the the "Timing Belt Recommendations" page, http://toyota.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/t...GltaW5n&p_li=#

You can also view your scheduled maintenance guide (usually called the "Passport to Performance") for your vehicle at http://smg.toyotapartsandservice.com/ to see what other maintenance items (besides the timing belt) should have been performed and at what intervals.
