Default 1992 toyota 4 cyl. truck- better to haul a trailer or pile everything in back?

Moving a bunch of stuff cross country and was wondering if it would be better for my vehicle to haul a trailer or load everything in the back of truck. Trucks getting a little old and doesn't have all that much power anymore. Which would be easier on the engine?

The engine cares about overall weight and effort to push it down the freeway. A trailer adds quite a bit of weight and doesn't help anything aerodynamically. Loading up the bed would be easier on the engine as long as you're not concerned about your stuff being out in the open.
