if your e brake is properly adjusted it should hold just fine, but you are better off to leave it in gear also.

I would always set the e-brake if on a steep hill the compression has a tendency to leak a little and can cause the vehicle to move a little at a time. It is possible to build up momentum and just roll down the hill or into another car, house, fence, person, who knows.

The rear brakes can be out of adjustment. If the hill is steep enough putting it in gear won't hold it either. Putting it in gear helps and on a small hill, less than 5% grade it will probably hold it. If you are in a real hilly area you need the ebrake. As the rear brakes wear down they get out of adjustment. If the brakes don't hold you could be close to needing rear shoes.

Try backing up and pulling up on the ebrake. That will adjust them automatically.........some.......but it may not be enough.

A clean and adjust at most shops is around $30 but they will have the brakes apart enough to do that ........that they can inspect the brakes and advise.

To answer your question, if the brakes are adjusted properly they will hold and that should be all you need. Putting it in 1st gear will help. Putting it in second or reverse will not help.

I would leave it in first and e brake it. Because who knows when the e brake something could go wrong. I also would turn my wheels/tires so if the car was to release it would not go into traffic but rather go toward the curb and avoid other accidents.

You can just set the e brake , but better to be safe then sorry and keep doing what you are doing
