Overdrive just means a gear ratio where the engine does less revolutions than the drive wheels. With 5 and 6 speed transmissions it is possible to have 2 overdrive gears.

On cars with automatic transmission, the overdrive option allows the gears to shift at higher RPMs.















On automatic cars the gears shift at lower RPMs than when you shift them manually. Shfting at higher RPMs has a few performance advantages but not meant for everyday use.















Overdrive is usually a sport/ or rugged use feature and results in more horsepower, torque and even speed.

Overdrive is usually used on the freeway as an extra gear and uses less fuel because the engine is not reving as hard.
