Default Why is low gas milage of 98 corolla?

Recently I bought a 98 corolla. Everything is fine excet the gas milage. It is 22 MPG local and about the same on free way. I changed oil, front/rear o2 sensors and cleaned up the MAP sensor but the MPG doesn't improve. What can I do?

I went to Toyota dealer last week for oil change. They checked the air filter and it was fine. I changed spark plugs 2 months ago but not the wires. I hesitate to change the distributor. I don't know how and don't want to mess up the timing.

Did you try changing your air filter/filters? It really should be getting up around 30. How about spark plugs-plug wires and distributor cap/rotor. Replace those if you havent.

perhaps it just gets 22mpg. cars tend to loose a bit of mileage as they get older. I drive a 97 ford escort and get about 26 mpg. Its about the same size as a carolla.

Check the spark plugs. Most cars have plugs that are made to last about 100,000 miles or 10 years (approx). Its possible that it still has the original spark plugs. The good news is that this is an easy and inexpensive repair.

Many factors will affect fuel MPG.

tire pressure

tire type

fuel grade

DRIVING HABITS

These are only a few items that will affect your MPG.

I read that you change/cleaned several items, WHY? Were the items out of range when tested? How did you "clean" up the MAP sensor (Toyota calls it a Mass Air Flow sensor by the way). Have you asked to have the issue diagnosed or did you just guess on the services you should get?

I suggest you check your tires, if the psi is low raise it to the proper level (not to the maximum listed on the tire) and adjust your driving habits.
