Default 1990 Toyota Celica problem?

My 1990 Toyota Celica won't shift from 1st to 2nd or 3rd, will only shift from 1st from 4th and 5th and reverse and neutral. New clutch, new clutch disk and plate installed and now having this problem. Makes grinding sound when shifting to those gears. Does anyone know if it could be a problem with the car itself and not the new parts? This is the first time the clutch has been replaced. Any advice welcome.

Did the fluids get refilled when the transmission was put back in?

If it was not doing it before the clutch was replaced, then I would say it is the new parts. Most likely needs some adjustment.

Could be the gearbox - the gear selectors could be damaged or badly worn.

Might be a new gearbox (you can get one from a scrapyard for about £40) - Fitting wouldn't be too much, depending on where you took it

heh my buddy had one of these when we were in tech school.. The slave cylinder would't always work and he had to keep it in gear with the clutch down and 2k rpm to make it stay running. The grinding noise is either a shitty driver, or more likely you have ground down clutch packs in the transmission and there is metal all thru your system which means that you A) need to drain the fluid and make sure ALL metal grinds are out or B(which is most likely the case) you need a new tranny

IIRC 1st and Reverse are connected, 4th and 5th are connected, and 2nd and 3rd gears are connected.

Now...

1.) did they put new fluid in your trans?

2.) was it doing it before you did the clutch?

It could just need adjustment, or if it was doing it before the trans might have been on the way out to begin with.

More info would be needed to lead you in the right direction.
