the manual, or should I? my car has over 80k, should I continue to change oil every 5,000 miles as scheduled in the manual, or should I change it sooner now (like every 3000miles) since it has more miles? It is a 2002 lexus es 300.

you bring up a good point. if the engine is starting to suffer from blowby then yes it would be a good idea to give the oil less time to be contaminated. but honestly, the engine should be fine with no blowby. in that case, really no reason. a compression test usually has to be done to indicate blowby.

if you can afford it, it would be a nice safeguard but most of the time it would be overkill.

Go ahead with the 5000 mile oil change. I do this with my cars and only put 185,000 on the last one and it is still on the road today.

Ok two factors --

Are you using regular oil or synthetic???

Naturally as your car gets older the seals and gaskets begin to wear out. So a thinner oil will leak a lot faster then a thicker oil.

Synthetic= Super Thin Oil---5,000 miles

Regular oil= Well is regular, not as thin ect--- 3,000 miles

Now if you using regular oil once you start to hit that 100,000 mile mark start using a heavier wieght.

--Note once your motor has been run about 80,000 miles on regular oil it doesn't cope well with changing to Synthetic

Now if your using Synthetic I'm pretty sure your fine you can continue to change it every 5,000

Hope this makes sense
