Default 1991 toyota celica gt-s problem?

almost everyday I get this problem with my celica, when I step on the gas this thing happens where my car is not moving but my engine screaming then it jumps and starts going really fast and then it happens again, in other words its like my car is in neutral for about 3 to 5 seconds then jumps to drive really fast. does anyone know whats going on? and how much it would cause to fix this? or I hope my car could just need a tune up.

forgot to add this is an automatic car

Your transmission is slipping or your torque converter is on it's way out. The first thing you should do is check the transmission fluid level and make sure it is correct. If that doesn't cure the issue, chances are the transmission or the torque converter will need to be rebuilt or replaced soon.
