While is seems just the opposite, you will actually lose traction with larger and wider tires. It is a question of pounds per square inch placed on your tire footprint. More tire on the ground, less pounds per square inch...Now this may not be a problem in dry conditions but may will you hydroplane on a wet road and forget about traction in snow.
Put a ice skate on your foot and step in the snow...what happens your weight is concentrated on the thin blade and you exert more pressure per square inch on the snow. Now put on a snow shoe..what happens? yup less pressure...less pressure means less traction.
